CA Governor Discussion
John Mc Laughlin shared his research with the club. The quick consensus for the Governor’s race was to support Xavier Becerra. However, we agreed to closely monitor polling and upcoming debates, and remain open to supporting whichever candidate emerges as the strongest contender.
Sue Walker- President of the Mountain Homeless Coalition
Sue Walker joined us to share the impactful work of the Mountain Homeless Coalition, which she helped found in 2016. The Coalition focuses on three key areas, providing emergency shelter, often in local motels, helping individuals and families transition into permanent housing with support for deposits and first month’s rent up to $2,000, and preventing evictions by assisting with back rent and utilities. She noted that the current count of unhoused individuals in the Rim of the World area is approximately 125, underscoring the importance of these services.
Through Sue’s expertise as a grant writer, the organization secured critical funding and helped establish the mountain region as one of the County’s designated service areas for homelessness. Today, Sue continues to advocate at the regional level as a member of the Continuum of Care Board, which oversees funding decisions.
