Gabriel Montoya of SEIU–United Healthcare Workers West joined us to discuss the Billionaire Tax Act (cabillionairetax.org), a proposed California ballot initiative that would tax billionaires 5% of their total wealth. The measure aims to offset major funding cuts tied to H.R. 1, set to take effect in 2027, with 90% of the revenue directed toward protecting critical programs like Medicaid, education, and SNAP. These projected cuts, estimated at $30 billion annually, could be especially devastating for rural communities, impacting local hospitals and areas with large retiree populations who depend on Medicaid. Gabriel emphasized the urgency of the moment, encouraging our members to sign the petition and volunteer to gather signatures, as our mountain communities have seen little outreach so far. The campaign is working to collect 1 million signatures by April 20.
